An upmarket fashion retail store, owned by designer Karen Walker, is closing after 10 years

The Department Store, in Takapuna on Auckland's North Shore, is home to a handful of Kiwi brands, including Walker's own.

She told the Herald the idea the idea of a bricks and mortar shop being a destination store is no longer as relevant as it was a decade ago.

Walker says retail now belongs more on the internet.

The Department Store's final day of trade is January 26.
