Former KiwiRail Chief Executive Peter Reidy is returning to his former role

He led the state-owned enterprise from 2014 to 2018, before spending nearly four years as the boss of Fletcher Construction.

The Rail and Maritime Transport Union are welcoming the appointment -- saying he will bring a much-needed steady hand during a challenging time.
