A bold tyre strategy has paid off for Kiwi Matt Payne after taking the chequered flag in race three of the Tasmania Super 440.

The 22-year-old - who qualified 11th for the race - opted to take his second compulsory pit-stop during a mid-race safety car, leaving him on his final set of wheels for the remaining 48 laps of the race.

Payne knew he had to hold on with championship leader Broc Feeney hot on his heels in the final lap.
