Bluff's Tiwai Point aluminium smelter will be operational for at least another four years

Bluff's Tiwai Point aluminium smelter will be operational for at least another four years

Despite plans to close the smelter by August, Rio Tinto and Meridian Energy have come to an agreement that will give time for stakeholders to plan for the future.

New Zealand's Aluminium Smelter chief Stewart Hamilton says the deal comes after a very challenging 14 months.

He's proud of the way his team has maintained a stable and safe operation, while working towards the four year extension.
