Drug harm is costing the country billions and leading many to crisis point - prompting calls for an urgent shift in the system

Drug harm is costing the country billions and leading many to crisis point - prompting calls for an urgent shift in the system

The Drug Foundation says years of under-funding have left providers struggling to cope with demand - and rates of unmet need are increasing.

Its new report outlines a health-based approach that prioritises harm reduction and early intervention.

Executive Director Sarah Helm says the situation is made worse by drug laws - that put people off seeking help.

She says it should be easier for people to get help - than end up in hospital or with a conviction.
