The Government is proposing a law change to enshrine free speech at New Zealand Universities

The Government is proposing a law change to enshrine free speech at New Zealand Universities

Amendments to the Education and Training Act will require universities to adopt a freedom of speech statement and report yearly on its commitment.

Act leader David Seymour says there is a growing trend of universities de-platforming speakers and cancelling events they perceive as controversial.

He says the Coalition deal commits to ensuring universities perform their role as the critic and conscience of society.

The Bill will be introduced in March.
