Climate change and extreme weather events are driving up the price of house insurance

Climate change and extreme weather events are driving up the price of house insurance

A Consumer NZ report says spikes in insurance are down to natural disasters - and New Zealand needs a framework for adapting to climate change.

The report finds costs have increased more than 900-percent since 2000.

Insurance Council Chief Executive Kris Faafoi says central government needs to act.

He says a lot of money has been spent responding to events, and they could do better by building in some protections.
