A public health warning has been issued, against collecting or consuming shellfish from Crail Bay in the Marlborough Sounds

Routine testing has found toxins in the shellfish are above safe levels.

Mussels, oysters, tuatua, pipi, toheroa, cockles, scallops, catseyes, kina and all other bivalve shellfish should not be eaten.

Cooking shellfish does not remove the toxin.

Paua, crab and crayfish should also not be eaten if the gut has not been completely removed prior to cooking.

Anyone who becomes ill is advised to call Healthline or seek immediate medial attention.
