They don't know why it happened, but the Fire Service is taking responsibility for the false alarm which caused undue panic last night

A siren went off in the Western Bay of Plenty just after 9pm, seeing a number of people jump in their vehicles and flee.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand Chief Executive Rhys Jones says they apologise, and will be investigating further.

He says they're taking responsibility and are finding out what happened with their sirens.
