Fears recreational cannabis use will do more harm, than good

Fears recreational cannabis use will do more harm, than good

New Zealanders vote on whether to make recreational cannabis use legal, as part of next month's election.

On Newstalk ZB's cannabis referendum debate, Say Nope to Dope's Aaron Ironside revealed he used cannabis every day for three years and says Cannabis Use Disorder is real.

He says the only thing he wanted when he woke up, was to get high.

Similarly, Police Association president Chris Cahill says the reason most cops are against the legislation, is because they see the harm it causes.

He says they see the real waste of life -- a lot in rural, Maori communities, where the least support is.

But, the Drug Foundation's Ross Bell says legalisation means profits will be reinvested into helping people -- rather than into the hands of gangs.

He says the law right now acts as a barrier for those seeking help.
