A 17-year-old has been sentenced to a year's home detention for fatally setting a sleeping woman on fire in 2020, aged 12

Open Justice reports the boy poured petrol on the women's bed and lit it, after a disagreement.

He pleaded guilty this year to an amended charge of manslaughter.

At the High Court in Palmerston North today the crown prosecutor stressed it wasn't a plea deal.

Reporter Jeremy Wilkinson says the teen's been granted several discounts.

He says it includes his young age, his difficult home life, and the guilty plea.
