Telco 2Degrees has joined the space race, aiming to expand its cellular and broadband network

It's partnering with satellite manufacturer AST SpaceMobile and building a New Zealand ground station, hoping to connect customers by next year.

Chief executive Mark Callander says it'll work with standard mobile phones, bridging coverage gaps.

He says space-based connectivity is important to their long-term strategy.
