Donald Trump beats Kamala Harris to win Arizona, final state to be called in US presidential election

The Associated Press calls Arizona for Donald Trump, the final state to be called in the US election and locking in a decisive Electoral College victory over Democratic Vice-President Kamala Harris.

The Associated Press (AP) has called Arizona for Donald Trump, completing a clean sweep of all seven battleground states and locking in a decisive Electoral College victory over Democratic Vice-President Kamala Harris.

The win in Arizona hands a further 11 Electoral College votes to President-elect Trump.

He had already been declared the winner over Vice-President Harris.

Trump, who had secured the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the White House by early Wednesday, now has what is expected to be a final total of 312 votes to Ms Harris' 226.

AP only declares a winner once it can determine that a trailing candidate can not close the gap and overtake the vote leader.

The president-elect won the state of Nevada on Saturday afternoon, returning the state and its six electoral votes to the Republicans for the first time since president George W Bush carried it in 2004.

    Swing state sweep

In addition to Arizona and Nevada, Trump won the swing states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina and Wisconsin.

A swing state is where there is no overwhelming preference for Republicans or Democrats.

While most states across the US were called on election night, Arizona typically takes a few days to come to a result.

Most Arizona voters cast ballots by mail, and poll workers must wait until polls close to process the ballots that arrive on election day.

In 2016, Trump won Arizona over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, but Joe Biden flipped the state blue in 2020.

Mr Biden defeated Trump by winning six of the seven swing states, only narrowly losing North Carolina, and won 306 Electoral College votes to Trump's 232.

Trump also won 306 in his 2016 victory over Hillary Clinton.

AP said Trump has won 74.6 million votes nationwide, or 50.5 per cent, to Harris's 70.9 million, or 48 per cent.

After Congress certifies the Electoral College vote on January 6, Trump and his incoming vice-president, US Senator JD Vance, are due to take office on January 20.

Trump has already made one appointment to his team, announcing his campaign manager Susie Wiles will be his chief of staff, becoming the first woman to hold the influential White House role.
