Joe Hawke is being remembered as a great Maori leader

Joe Hawke is being remembered as a great Maori leader

    He died yesterday, aged 82.

Hawke led the Bastion Point occupation in the 1970s and became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Maori and the community in 2008.

He was also a Labour MP between 1996 and 2002.

Maori Development Minister Willie Jackson says he was a treasure not just for Maori - but the whole country.

He says Hawke led one of the most significant protests in the country's history and was something else in terms of fighting for Maori rights.
