Vanessa Kirby has praised Hollywood's "active desire" to see women pushed to the forefront of films

The 'Crown' star is thrilled to see people in power having that "realisation that female-led movies can make money", insisting she is "really excited" by the progress

Speaking to the January and February issue of Esquire UK, she said: "There is now an active desire for people in power to create [fully realised, three-dimensional] parts for women. And a realisation that female-led movies can make money. I’m really excited by that. There are so many stories about women that haven’t been told. And it’s not about putting a woman in a male role and her playing the equivalent of the masculine alpha. Which I also can’t identify with. I don’t feel like I recognise that person, this invincible woman. I want to see women who are humans. I want to see those really raw, big journeys that [female characters] used to have. I really feel that’s my mission, to play a part in bringing that back."

Meanwhile, Vanessa thinks the pay gap between Claire Foy and Matt Smith made "no sense".

The actress thinks it is "really important" that the inequality between her co-stars - who played Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in the Netflix drama series - was made public because it will give others in a similar situation "a voice" of their own.

She said: "I think it's really important, because if we discuss it at our level, then hopefully it will give people a voice, and not be at a disadvantage just because they are a different gender; it makes absolutely no sense."
