Marianne Faithfull's personal diaries are going up for sale

The As Tears Go By singer passed away in January at the age of 78 and now various items from her estate will be auctioned off in The evening of the day: The Estate of Marianne Faithfull, part of Bonhams' Sound + Cinema auction.

The items in the sale - which will 25 November to 3 December on bonhams.com and will be on view at Bonhams Knightsbridge in London - include personal diaries including a 1959 journal and a 1989 journal with 'Goals', which are expected to sell for £1,500- £2,000, a trunk owned by Carrie Fisher and gifted to Marianne with an estimated sale price of £1,000 - 1,500, A French painted iron bed, which will go for £300- £500, various works of art, items of clothing, and pieces of furniture.

Rebecca Anthony, Associate Specialist in the Popular Culture department at Bonhams, said: "Marianne Faithfull had an incredible life and career. A pioneering singer songwriter and a cultural icon with an exceptional sense of style and lasting legacy, we are delighted to bring items from her personal collection to auction for the first time."

Marianne's son, Nicholas Dunbar, hopes the items will "bring joy" to their eventual new owners.

He said: "Marianne made her home in many places around the world during her remarkable life and career, collecting unique pieces of furniture and art along the way. Each piece tells a story and reflects her spirit and inimitable taste. It is time now for these belongings to find new homes and I hope that they will bring as much joy to their new owners as they did Marianne."

The Irina Palm actress previously auctioned off some of her other personal items in the months before her death, and Marianne explained at the time she didn't want to be definded by her belongings.

She told The Independent newspaper: "I've always enjoyed a life of the mind. My home is in my head, I carry it with me. I am my home.

"I enjoy nice things and always have, but they don't define me, and these days I get more joy from the garden where I'm living than anything else. It's time for them to find new owners that I hope will cherish them as much as I once did.

She added of her clothing in the sale: "Clothes have always been very important. To feel exquisitely dressed allowed me to become 'Marianne Faithfull', to feel ready. I've known so many of the great designers and they were all necessary in helping me create the 'fabulous beast' - my public persona."
