Harrison Ford has slammed “selfish” people who “ignore” climate change

The ‘Star Wars’ actor has teamed up with Conservation International - a non-profit for which he is the vice-chairman - for a short film explaining the impact climate change is having on the planet

In the film, he says: “Our world is facing huge challenges. Storms, floods, droughts, and fires are destroying our homes. A pandemic threatens our lives, is decimating our economies and laying bare the depths of social inequality. The necessary foundation of our lives is a vital healthy natural world - our source of clean water, food, and a stable climate. We’re watching that foundation crumble.”

And speaking with Time about the project, the 78-year-old star hit out at those who choose to ignore the “overwhelming scientific evidence” that the “climate crisis is real”.

Harrison took aim at world leaders who “choose to make climate change a divisive issue”, as he said global warming “will kill us” if nothing is done to stop it.

He fumed: “The climate crisis is real - the weight of scientific evidence is overwhelming … but evidence can be ignored, it can be manipulated. Leaders who choose to make climate change a divisive issue do it to protect the entrenched economic interests who profit from behaviour that destroys our planet. It’s selfish. It’s short-sighted. It needs to stop … This s*** is going to kill us.”

The ‘Indiana Jones’ star - who is a longtime environmental activist - also claimed certain leaders who don’t acknowledge the threat of climate change are “robbing” people of the chance to “move forward”.

He added to Time: “We have people in leadership positions who refuse to accept objective science. They’re robbing us of the ability to collaborate, to compromise, to move forward.”
