Family-favourite KPop Demon Hunters bizarrely took inspiration from the violent 2017 Korean flick The Villainess

The Jung Byung-gil thriller features scenes about murder, prostitution and assault, and for the "dance fighting" scenes in the Netflix animation, they borrowed from The Villainess, but used "sparkle dust" to make it gentler for the young viewers

Animation director Josh Beveridge is quoted by Variety as quipping at the Animation Is Film Festival in Los Angeles: "You can get pretty violent if you put a lot of glitter on."

He continued: "Some of those fight choreographers had done some idol training, and in between the moves, they'd make these cute little adjustments. That is where the personality is."

The record-breaking animation sees fictional K-pop group HUNTR/X face-off boy band The Saja Boys, who are demons, and has become a cultural phenomenon, with over 325 million views.

The music, meanwhile, has smashed records, with the HUNTR/X track Golden (performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and REI AMI) sitting atop the Billboard Hot 100 and Official UK Chart for eight weeks, making history as the joint-longest-running No.1 single by an animated act in UK chart history.

All eyes will be on the Oscars next year, after Netflix revealed Golden has been submitted for awards.
