Liam Hemsworth is "super excited" about his engagement to Gabriella Brooks

The Hunger Games actor found love with Gabriella in 2019, months after splitting from his first wife Miley Cyrus, and the couple went public with their relationship update last month revealing they are planning to get married - and Liam has now dec lared it's a "happy time in life" for the pair

During an interview on the Today show, Liam said: "I'm incredibly excited."

He also explained the proposal did not take place in the Maldives despite rumours suggesting he popped the question during a romantic holiday with his partner with the actor confessing he actually got down one knee several months ago.

Liam revealed the couple headed to the sunny spot to relax after the actor finishing filming on his TV show The Witcher, saying: "I sort of did it [propose] a few months ago. It wasn't actually in the Maldives.

"We went there recently. I finished shooting about three weeks ago and went straight to a tropical island and let my hair down, or took my hair off [the wig he wears for The Witcher].

"But no, we're super excited. It's a happy time in life."

The couple's engagement news was confirmed in a post on Instagram which showed the 29-year-old model flashing her huge engagement ring as she cuddled up to Liam.

The post, which was captioned with a simple white heart emoji, featured another photo of Gabriella's hand on a white sheet, allowing fans a close-up view of her diamond sparkler.

It was claimed just a year ago that the couple weren't particularly interested in getting married, particularly because 35-year-old Liam's marriage to Miley lasted less than a year.

A source told Us Weekly magazine: "They have no plans on getting married anytime soon - and perhaps, not at all. Liam didn't have a good experience the first time around. And it's not something he thinks of in a positive light."

Meanwhile, Gabriella previously described her relationship with Liam as "sacred" and it is important to them both to keep things as private as possible.

Speaking to Australia's Daily Telegraph's Stellar magazine, she shared: "My personal relationship is very, very important and very sacred to me.

"I completely understand [the interest in her relationship]. But at the end of the day, I guess I just like having that for me.

"My personal relationship is very, very important and very sacred to me."

She also expressed her love for Hemsworth's family, adding: "They [the Hemsworths] are great. They are the most beautiful people and I'm very lucky to know them."
