Tilda Swinton is clueless when it comes to social media

The 65-year-old actress has never been on the likes of Instagram, Facebook, X and TikTok, and she much prefers talking to people in person.

Speaking at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V+A) in Kensington, London, Tilda is quoted by the Daily Mail newspaper's Eden Confidential column as saying: "I am one of the last humans on the planet who has never had anything to do with social media.

"I don't really know how it operates. Posting? Honestly, I am that Luddite."

The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe star worried that social media is taking over the lives of young people.

Tilda said: "One thing that makes me nervous about social media - I am fearful that young people edit their lives and edit their communication with other humans too much, and only put their best foot forward on their social media presence.

"When you're in actual communication with people, you can't [do that]. You might miss out on some really useful mess."

In 2019, Tilda said people are having to "wake up" to the idea that social media can be "toxic" for all generations.

She told BBC News: "It's a catching disease. It goes upwards.

"There are more people talking about the toxicity of social media, even people with 130 million people following them on Instagram, than people who are saying it's just all fluffy and fun, now.

"I think everybody's having to wake up to that."

Another benefit of having no social media presence is that Tilda can get on with other things in her life.

In an interview with Dazed in 2017, The Room Next Door actress - who primarily lives in Nairn, Scotland - said: "It leaves more space and time for collecting eggs and shooting the breeze and thinking about building a boat and all that good stuff.

"You can hear your own ears where I live. You can wake up and make a plot for your day and follow as much of it as you wish."
