Calls for better roadwork planning near railway crossings after a fatal crash nearly three years ago

Calls for better roadwork planning near railway crossings after a fatal crash nearly three years ago

Two people were killed in In December 2019 when their car collided with a train at a Morrinsville level crossing.

The crossing was undergoing complicated roadworks.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has made two recommendations, including better traffic management plans - and permits for work in a rail corridor.

Chief Investigator of Accidents Harald Hendel says the roadworks contractor hadn't asked KiwiRail for permission to work in the rail corridor.

That meant no special safety measures were in place.
