The onus shouldn't fall on rental companies to keep everyone safe on the roads

The onus shouldn't fall on rental companies to keep everyone safe on the roads

A Coroner's report released yesterday has found a German backpacker had crossed the centreline, resulting in a horror crash in Southland which killed three.

The Coroner recommends car rental companies should introduce better assessments - before deciding whether to rent to overseas drivers.

Tourism Industry Aotearoa CEO Chris Roberts says tourists crash for the same reasons Kiwi drivers do.

He says roads need to be upgraded, and there needs to be education about our roads before visitors get here.
