Surface flooding across parts of the North Island as rain batters down

The New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has issued a warning - asking drivers to take extra care and reminding people to be ready for potential hazards.

South Wairarapa District Council expects State Highway 53 to close this afternoon, due to potentially unsafe water levels.

Further south, Canterbury's State Highway 73 from Springfield to Castle Hill has shut due to snow.
