'Crisis averted' is the message from Environment Canterbury, as it works to contain an oil spill in Akaroa Harbour

'Crisis averted' is the message from Environment Canterbury, as it works to contain an oil spill in Akaroa Harbour

Up to 300 litres of lubricating oil spilled from Navy ship HMNZS Te Kaha yesterday.

The Defence Force says it was caused by a defect in one of the ship's oil coolers.

Environment Canterbury Harbourmaster Guy Harris says teams were in the water for most of the day, absorbing and containing the spill.

He says they may need to return today for some minor cleaning up, but he thinks they've got most of it.
