Auckland University scientists have modelled the disruption a simulated quake would have on the transport network.
They suggest it could block South Island highways in more than 120 places, leave 10-thousand people cut off, and cost the economy about 10-billion dollars.
Transport Agency's Pete Connors says parts of the highway network wouldn't be accessible to workers, because of aftershock hazards - and would take months to rebuild.
