    A mixed first full day of action for the New Zealand team at the Paris Olympics


    Swimmer Erika Fairweather's just missed a medal - finishing fourth in the women's 400 metre freestyle final.

    Canoe slalom veteran Luuka Jones is through to the K1 semifinals - while the eventing team have performed well to sit fourth after the dressage phase.

    At the rowing venue - single scullers Emma Twigg and Tom Mackintosh are safely through to the quarterfinals, while both double sculls duos have advanced to those semifinals.

    The OlyWhites have been thumped 4-1 by the USA, and the men's hockey side conceded a late goal to lose 2-1 to India.

    The men's sevens team finished fifth after two wins to round out that tournament - won by France, following the hosts 28-7 thumping of Fiji in the final.

    And - at the surfing in Tahiti - Billy Stairmand's been forced into the elimination round.

    Female counterpart Saffi Vette is due up in round one action in around an hour's time.
