Ben Stokes is preparing to captain the England cricket team for the first time

Incumbent Joe Root could be absent for the first test against the West Indies, as he and his wife prepare for the birth of their second child.

British covid-19 protocols dictate that Root would have to self-isolate for a week after leaving hospital, meaning his chances of walking out at Southampton on July 8 are remote.

Stokes' previous highest leadership calling was for the Durham academy in 2008.
