The Ford ace completed an impressive first-up drive to edge out Chaz Mostert.
Kiwi - and series champion - Shane van Gisbergen was seventh quickest in his first hitout.
It was a disastrous opening session for Brad Jones Racing's Macauley Jones, who had engine troubles in the first few minutes as smoke billowed from his Commodore.
