The Phoenix are ruing a poor night in front of goal during a 3-nil defeat to Newcastle in football's A-League

Wellington created several opportunities to score in the first half, but were unable to find a way past the Jets defence.

Coach Ufuk Talay says they put themselves in positions to score.

The Phoenix can't now finish in the top two and will play an elimination final next weekend.

Their opponent will be one of Brisbane, Perth or Western United.
