A Growing up in New Zealand report found 15 year-olds with school satisfaction and academic success had lower anxiety and depression.
Six in 10 teenagers who found school difficult - had more issues with mental health.
Research Director Professor Sarah-Jane Paine says the data paints a picture of what kids are going through.
She says it's important we recognise school as the main place kids spend their time - so we can provide support.
