Pressure's mounting on the Government to step in amidst rising tension over Kapiti Airport

Pressure's mounting on the Government to step in amidst rising tension over Kapiti Airport

Kapiti Coast District Council members will today vote on a plan asking central government to buy back airport land.

The future of the airport is under a cloud after its owner, NZPropCo, voiced concern over its economic viability.

The land the airport occupies, is also at the centre of multiple Treaty of Waitangi claims.

The council has previously supported returning the ancestral airport land to its original owners.

The plan on the table today would see government buy the land and keep the airport operating, while negotiations with mana whenua continue.
