A large slip at Mt Maunganui's Mauao has hit the campsite at the hill's base

A large slip at Mt Maunganui's Mauao has hit the campsite at the hill's base

Tauranga City Council says Mauao is closed to the public and the area is unsafe.

An eyewitness says screaming could be heard from the campsite, and there are concerns some people could be trapped.

They say the slip has hit tents and campervans.

Images also show extensive damage to the popular hot pools.
