Wellington Water has isolated a main after it flooded parts of Aro Street

It burst this afternoon, sending water skyrocketing into the air.

Water had reached half way up the wheels of some parked cars and sand bags have been brought in to protect garages.

Newstalk ZB reporter Jack Crossland says the water has been brought under control.

He says the site of the break looks like a bubbling brook - but earlier the water was metres high.
