A prediction we're in for a big number when the latest inflation rate is released later today

A prediction we're in for a big number when the latest inflation rate is released later today

Stats NZ is set to reveal the Consumer Price Index data for the December quarter, at 11am.

Independent economist Cameron Bagrie says market expectations seem to be centered around 1.5 percent for the quarter - which will take the annual rate up towards six percent.

He says we haven't seen that sort of headline inflation pressure in 30 years.

Bagrie says inflation at the end of September was 4.9 percent - but looks like it's going to be up around six percent.

He says inflation is a thief that comes along and steals your money, and makes people poorer.
