Police are encouraging people to contact authorities if they see gang patches in public

New police powers in effect since yesterday, let officers arrest people displaying gang insignia in public places.

More than a dozen gang members are already due before court already - including an Auckland leader of the Head Hunters.

Assistant Commissioner, Paul Basham, says some searches this morning were thanks to tips from the public.

He expects people to report the behaviour like they would any other law breaking.
