Dame Tariana Turia's tangihanga is in its third day

Dame Tariana Turia's tangihanga is in its third day

Turia, who served as a Member of Parliament for 18 years, died on Friday morning.

She's being remembered by political leaders, iwi representatives, and her whanau -- at Whangaehu Marae.

Mourners are sharing speeches about her life, and joining in waiata, and haka.

Dame Tariana Turia's notable opposition to the Foreshore and Seabed Act of 2004 caused her split with the Labour Party -- leading to the formation of Te Pati Maori.

She represented the Maori seat of Te Tai Hauauru for Labour, then the Maori Party -- bidding farewell to politics in 2014.
