A New Zealand trial's found a cheap treatment - given only once every five to 10 years - could significantly reduce the risk of bone fractures in older women

Results from an Auckland University study have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Drops in certain hormones after menopause can weaken bone density -- raising the risk of bone fractures.

The medical trial has found use of osteoporosis medicines once every five to 10 years could prevent fractures and maintain bone density in women who are going through menopause.

The trial's leader's describe the results as astonishing.
