Madonna has taken aim at President Donald Trump's administration for "slowly dismantling" the "freedoms" of LGBTQ+ people

Along with the LGBTQ+ flag and a broken heart emoji, she wrote on X: "It's so sad to watch our new Government slowly dismantling all the Freedoms we have been fighting for and WON over the years.

"Don't give up the Fight!"

The 66-year-old music legend has a huge LGBTQ+ following and won the Advocate for Change Award accolade at the GLAAD Media Awards in 2019 for her activism.

Madonna famously raised awareness for HIV/AIDS amid the epidemic in the 1980s, a time when it was taboo to speak about and the virus had been branded a "gay disease".

Sarah Kate Ellis, the president and CEO of GLAAD, said of Trump bringing back the military ban: "Transgender people are already serving in the military with honour and keeping our country and military safer and stronger. They meet the same rigorous health and readiness standards, and continue to do so. The Trump administration's inaccurate statements and rhetoric targeting transgender people are not based on facts. LGBTQ Americans have been here before, ending 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' and Trump's previous trans military ban. Research and military experts have made it loud and clear that targeting service members because of who they are is blatantly discriminatory and makes our country less safe."

The 'Only Murders In The Building' star - whose family is from Mexico - shared an emotional video after almost 1,000 people were arrested over three days across major cities in the United States as part of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids.

In a since-deleted post on Instagram, she cried: "I just want to say that I'm so sorry. All my people are getting attacked.

"The children. I don't understand. I'm so sorry I wish I could do something but I can't.

"I don't know what to do. I'll try everything, I promise."

She captioned the video with a Mexican flag emoji and added: "I'm sorry."

The 32-year-old star was met with fierce backlash from Trump supporters accusing her of being performative.

After deleting the initial clip, she wrote on her Instagram Story: "Apparently it's not OK to show empathy for people."

Last week, Trump signed a number of ex ecutive orders which expanded ICE's powers to arrest and detain unlawful migrants to the US.

In the past, Selena has been vocal about her family's history after they illegally crossed the border from Mexico, although she pointed out that they "worked hard to gain United States citizenship".

Although she acknowledged a need for "rules and regulations", Selena pointed out the importance of immigration.

She wrote in a 2019 essay for Time magazine: "I don't claim to be an expert. I'm not a politician, I'm not a doctor, and I don't work in the system at all.

"I understand it's flawed and that we need rules and regulations, but we also have to remember that our country was formed by people who came here from other countries."
