Jimmy Kimmel has blasted Donald Trump's "hateful and vile" comments about the late Rob Reiner

The US president sparked outrage after he attributed the deaths of the director and his wife Michele Singer Reiner on Sunday (15.12.25) to "Trump derangement syndrome", and the talk show host thought the remarks were so outrageous, he thought the Truth Social post was "fake" at first.

Speaking on his show Jimmy Kimmel Live, the presenter branded Rob "one of our greatest directors and patriots."

He added: "What we need in a time like this, besides common sense when it comes to guns and mental healthcare, is compassion and leadership.

"We did not get that from our president because he has none of it to give ... Just when you think he can't go any lower, he somehow finds a way to do that."

"Blaming [Reiner's] death on the fact that he is an outspoken liberal, insulting someone who's just been murdered, who leaves children behind without having any idea of what actually happened, it's so hateful and vile. When I first saw it, I thought it was fake. My wife showed it to me this morning; I was like, 'Well, even for him, that'd seem like too much.' But nothing is ever too much for him."

He later showed a clip from Trump's Oval Office press conference, in which he doubled down on his remarks that Rob was "deranged".

Jimmy fumed: "That corroded brain is in charge of our lives."

"I know from my personal interactions with Rob Reiner that he would want us to keep pointing out the loathsome atrocities that continue to ooze out of this sick and irresponsible man's mouth."

Fellow talk show host Seth Meyers also admitted Trump's take on the tragedy was "even worse" than he had expected.

He said on Late Night: "Rob was no fan of the president, and because of that, the president was no fan of Rob's ... Just about 12 hours after Rob and Michele had been murdered in their own home, he wanted to take the opportunity to go on social media and post his thoughts about this tragedy.

"I feared this was something he was going to do, and I was pretty certain that it would cast a shadow on what was already a really dark day, but it was even worse than I could have imagined."

The former Saturday Night Live star admitted he initially thought Rob and Michelle - whose son Nick Reiner has been arrested for their murder - had been killed for either their Jewish identity or their political leanings, and noted we are living through a "terrible time" if those were "rational" thoughts.

He added: "And what a good time it would be to have a leader with a moral compass."

Trump initially hit out at the When Harry Met Sally director on his Truth Social platform.

The billionaire businessman wrote: "Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.

"He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace (sic)"

He later doubled down on his comments as he spoke to media.

Speaking from the Oval Office, CNN reports Trump said: "I wasn't a fan of his at all.

"He became like a deranged person - 'Trump derangement syndrome.' So, I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all in any way, shape or form. I thought he was very bad for our country."
