The sinking of Christchurch's beach suburbs has speed up post-earthquake -- to a rate faster than coastal parts of our other major cities

A new Victoria University report shows Southshore and the Brighton coast are dropping between four and nine millimetres a year.

That land subsided by less than one millimetre a year pre-quakes.

Project Lead, Dr Jesse Kearse says more research is needed to figure out why it's occurring so rapidly.

He says it's unclear whether it's related to settlement in process occurring near the ground surface, or much deeper down in the ground.
