A record number of cases of bacterial disease leptospirosis were recorded in 2023

A record number of cases of bacterial disease leptospirosis were recorded in 2023

The highest recorded in 20 years - 164 cases - are likely linked to flooding.

Exposure to animals like rodents or livestock and untreated water increase risk of infection.

Massey University epidemiologist Jackie Benschop , says there are key steps you can take to stay safe.

Vaccinate your livestock, control rodents and visit your doctor if you have flu-like symptoms and are exposed to risky enviroments.
