Rory McIlroy wins the 2025 Masters after extraordinary final round at Augusta National

Rory McIlroy becomes the sixth man to complete golf's career grand slam, with a dramatic playoff victory at The Masters at Augusta National.

Rory McIlroy has withstood a rollercoaster final round to clinch his first Masters win at Augusta National in a playoff, beating England's Justin Rose.

The emotional win made McIlroy the sixth man to complete a career grand slam, adding the Masters to wins at the Open Championship, US Open and PGA Championship, but it took countless twists and turns to get there.

    "It feels incredible," McIlroy said.

"This is my 17th time here, and I started to wonder whether it would ever be my time.

"And the last 10 years coming here, with the burden of the grand slam on my shoulders.

"I'm just absolutely honoured and thrilled to be able to call myself Masters champion."

McIlroy opened Sunday's final round with a double bogey, but regained his composure to retake and then extend his lead over his closest overnight challenger Bryson DeChambeau.

With his challengers falling away, McIlroy looked home and hosed, but he then copped a horror error on the 13th to surrender the lead to Englishman Rose.

That one hole saw a three-shot swing as Rose took the lead into the clubhouse with a final round 66.

Rose had started the day on five under, seven shots back, marking an incredible surge to the top of the leaderboard.

McIlroy had a chance to win it on the 18th, but his missed putt sent the tournament to a playoff.

Both men hit great approach shots on the first extra hole, but Rose missed a downhill putt for birdie, before McIlroy held his nerve and sunk a short putt for victory.

McIlroy sunk to his knees, tears flowing as he finally banished memories of his 2011 final round collapse and ended an 11-year wait to win his grand slam.

McIlroy joins golfing greats Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only male players to win the four majors.

Look back on how all the action unfolded in our live blog.
