Fears Canterbury ski town, Methven, will be overrun with Airbnbs

Fears Canterbury ski town, Methven, will be overrun with Airbnbs

Local Democracy Reports a Methven resident's claiming rules are increasingly disregarded, with listings over-running residential areas.

About 290 Airbnb rentals are listed in mid-Canterbury.

Paul Dixey says the Council needs to regulate better.

He says it doesn't seem right properties paying residential rates, are operating as commercial properties.

Ashburton District Council's, Ian Hyde, says it's reviewing how to handle the rise in short-term rentals, and its impact.
