    Researchers warn there's still barriers preventing people accessing magic mushroom medication, despite recent changes


    Psilocybin remains unapproved, but a Christchurch psychiatrist can now prescribe it for treatment-resistant depression - outside clinical trials.

    Medsafe has also approved Melatonin for over-the-counter sales at pharmacies.

    Auckland University Professor Suresh Muthukumaraswamy says authorisation is good, but there needs to be funding in place.

    He says there's a lot of psychotherapy involved in the treatment which becomes very expensive.
