Guy Fawkes night is over, but the debate about public fireworks sales continues on

Fire crews have been called to 60 fireworks-related call-outs overnight on what is traditionally one of the busiest nights of the year for our fire service.

New Zealand First's proposing to ban the retail sale of fireworks, while still allowing approved public displays.

Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue director Abbey van der Plas is on board - saying fireworks these days are equivalent to massive explosives and the sound goes on for weeks.

She says it's too much for many animals, who then develop anxiety disorders in which any sound can set them off.
