More than 2,000 people are still without electricity in the Coromandel and Western Bay of Plenty following extensive wind damage

The storm that ripped through the region last night initially cut power to more than 13,000 homes.

Lines company Powerco says some residents will be without power overnight tonight.

Head of Network Operations Mark Dunn says crews are working as quickly and safely as they can to make repairs, but there's extensive damage, with multiple poles and lines down in a number of places.
