Foxton and Shannon residents are being asked to urgently conserve water, and many flights in and out of Nelson are cancelled.
State Highway 6 east of Nelson, State Highway 57 and 56 north of Shannon, and many local roads are closed or impacted.
Paekakariki Holiday Park Manager Marilyn Heazlewood says tent campers were moved indoors last night due to falling branches.
She says she decided to move them into safer accommodation after the winds picked-up.
