The death toll sits at five, in the New South Wales floods, as the rain continues

Torrential downpours's have lashed eastern Australia, swelling already engorged rivers, engulfing roads and leaving almost 50-thousand people stranded.

Authorities have done more than 670 rescues since the flooding began.

ABC reports the storms have already dumped more than four months' of rain across parts of New South Wales in just two days.

Heavy rains have moved south affecting Sydney and Newcastle, with the Bureau of Meteorology issuing warnings for southern parts of the state.

Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, spoke during a visit to flood-hit areas, saying extreme weather events continue to occur more frequently and more intensely.
