Valerie Bertinelli was a "people pleaser for far too long"

The 65-year-old actress admits that ageing has led her to look at life, and her approach to it, in a totally different way

During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Valerie explained: "I had to turn 64 before I really caught on. I was that people pleaser for far too long. And I just decided after everything that happened last year, I'm done. I'm done."

Valerie is now determined to put her own interests first.

The actress - who was married to Tom Vitale between 2011 and 2022 - shared: "I'm going to put myself [first] - I have to care about myself. And at this age, I care less about what people who don't know me think about me."

Meanwhile, in 2024, Valerie announced that she was taking a break from social media to focus on her mental health.

The actress revealed via Instagram that she was stepping back from social media platforms, explaining that she was "in need of a mental health break".

She shared on Instagram at the time: "The last six or so weeks have been...a LOT.

"And while I am incredibly grateful for all your support for my book and everyone I've had the good fortune to meet, this here introvert in extrovert's clothing is in need of a mental health break. (sic)"

Valerie stressed at the time that she was "good", despite stepping back from social media.

The TV star - who has subsequently returned to platforms like Instagram - continued: "I know, I know, this isn't an airport, I don't need to announce my departure. I just know how some of you worry about me if I don't post often enough.

    "But, I'm good.

    "Honest.

"Taking a little social media cleanse/detox and a mental health break is a good thing and I'm grateful I'm at a place in my life where I'm aware enough to know when I'm overwhelmed and mentally/emotionally exhausted.

    "Y'all take care of yourselves.

"I'll be back before you know it. [heart emoji] (sic)"
