Fire crews will be back working to extinguish a large grass fire in Central Otago's Springvale this morning

The blaze is contained, but has burnt 20 hectares on both sides of Springvale Road, destroyed a shed, and scorched the exterior of one house.

Most evacuated residents were able to return home last night - apart from a few to the west of McArthur Road.

Fire and Emergency Incident Controller Nic McQuillan says one crew patrolled for flare ups overnight, with more returning today to extinguish the deep-seated areas.

A specialist assessor is also working to identify and fell dangerous fire damaged trees.
